I thoroughly enjoyed reading both Aimee's blog and Kelly's. Both talk about engagement and ultimately problem solving as opposed to rote memorization. Has anyone heard of the term....."Rote Learning" Tell me what that means please, somebody, anybody!!!!!!!!!
This is a good time to mention and talk about the very important BC Principles of Learning......has anyone stumbled across them.....if not, try to stumble and find them.....very important.....often on interview questions by principles....should know them before going into the schools!!!!!!!!!

I think this relates a little to the post I just sent regarding my Math class experiences in grade school. I looked on Wikipedia and they say that "rote learning" is a learning technique which avoids understanding of a subject and instead focuses on memorization.
ReplyDeleteSantosh had asked us in class if we actually knew what multiplication was and many of us sat back and actually had to think about it. What is multiplication? Well I think that this is a perfect example of "rote learning". None of us were actually really taught what it means, we were simply instructed to follow and memorize a set of procedures in order to obtain the right answer. As in my case, being a visual learner, this is not an efficient way of learning. Taking less of a "learn by memory" approach and allowing students to think for themselves and use a trial and error approach will be much more effective for understanding a concept or a problem.
